Job Title: EDUCATIONAL
INTERPRETER
Reports To: Administrator/Director

JOB
GOAL: To provide appropriate
interpreting services and to facilitate communication for students with special
needs.
ESSENTIAL
REQUIREMENTS: To
perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each
requirement satisfactorily. The
requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or
ability needed for the position.
1. High School Diploma or equivalent as required
by Office of Public Instruction
2. Completion of an accredited interpreter
program
3. Ability to understand and follow oral and
written instructions
4. Ability to work harmoniously with others and
to communicate effectively (both orally
and in
writing) with students, parents, and staff
5. Ability to maintain confidentiality
6. Fluent and accurate in conceptual sign and
experienced in an educational setting
7. Ability to be the liaison for the student and
his/her parents to the school and the school
to the
student and his/her parents
8. Ability to transliterate/interpret
information accurately, conveying the thought, intent and
spirit of
the sender in a manner appropriate to the student's communication level
9. Ability to merge the personal/student
behaviors with the classroom setting, and implement
behavior
management in accordance
10. Possess
knowledge of district/school procedures and policies and ability to interpret
to
students,
parents and staff
11. Ability to
work effectively in an environment which may be both physically and emotionally
fatiguing,
perform physically demanding requirements of the job
12. Ability to
work with students who may exhibit aggressive behavior, as required of specific
job
assignment
13. Ability to
work with students who may require attention to basic feeding and personal
hygiene
needs, as required by specific job assignment
14. Possess
knowledge of English usage, mathematics, and a basic understanding of the
subjects in
which this position is to provide assistance
15. Ability to
function in a professional manner appropriate to the situation
16. Perform
physical requirements which may include:
A. Light to moderate degree of
physical stamina
B. Frequent standing, walking,
bending, sitting
C. Ability to drive to various
locations in the community and
to all
school/district locations
D. Ability to use the telephone
18. Such
alternative to the above requirements as the Administration may deem
appropriate and
acceptable.

ESSENTIAL
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may also be assigned.
1. Transliterate and/or interpret lectures,
discussions, tests, films, assemblies, and student
comment in
all communication settings
2. Become knowledgeable of the program
philosophy, curriculum, activities and support
services,
and assist the district staff in determining appropriate accommodations
modified to
meet the needs of the target student(s)
3. Assist school personnel in identifying ways
to meet the educational needs of the
target
student(s)
4. Work with school personnel to make the
student's first exposure to the school a
positive,
non-threatening experience
5. Participate in planning and implementing in-service
programs involving school staff
members,
assisting them in recognizing and understanding the collective and individual
needs of
the target student(s), and in developing programs and services necessary
to
accommodate those needs.
6. Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and
confidentiality when dealing with student and
staff
information
7. Work with students and parents to encourage
regular attendance
8. Interpret the communication and interaction
between students with impairments and those
without, as
appropriate
9. Interpret/transliterate for students, parents
and other professionals at conferences, IEP
meetings,
and other school sponsored activities as required
10. Provide
appropriate input as requested for record keeping, program data and etc.
11. Ability to
encourage independence in students and avoid development of inappropriate
dependence
on the student/interpreter relationship
12. Participate
in activities, in-services, and skill building workshops to improve knowledge
in
interpreting, transliterating, the educational process, and issues relating to
students
with
special needs
13. Participate
as a member of the multi disciplinary team; attend IEP meetings as either an
interpreter
or as a participant of the team as required
14. Act as a friendly
ambassador for School District No. 30
15. Perform such
other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as
may seem to
be appropriate by the Administration.
16. Maintains satisfactory attendance, as defined
in District policy and handbook(s).
CERTIFICATES,
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, BONDING, AND/OR TESTING REQUIRED:
1. Possess and maintain a valid First Aid card (if
required)
2. Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
3. Possess valid Montana Driver's License
4. Bloodborne Pathogens Training

OF EMPLOYMENT: Days
and hours to be arranged, with salary according to current schedule.
EVALUATION: Following the probationary
period, performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with
provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
