This class is presented by the Mission Valley Back Country Horsemen.
This course introduces students to responsible backcountry travel with stock, emphasizing
“Light on the Land” principles, wilderness stewardship, and defensive horse safety. Students
learn horse and mule anatomy, catching and grooming, and progress through pack saddle
systems—including Decker and sawbuck saddles—with hands-on practice fitting saddles to
mules. Instruction covers cargoing methods such as mantying, panniers, and pack boxes, along
with essential knots. The class also addresses food selection, backcountry cooking, waste
minimization, and camp setup. Throughout the course, students repeatedly practice saddling,
loading, and balancing loads, culminating in a final exercise where each student independently
catches, grooms, saddles, manties, loads, and leads their mule.

Location: RMS choir room
Instructor: Molly Wilson
Prerequisites: please bring your own instrument and have a basic (high school) level proficiency on it.
Cost: $20
Do you have a desire to make music? This class is an opportunity to get your instrument out and brush off the cobwebs and let the notes fly! We will focus on playing together as a small group with different instruments, good tone quality, intonation, musicality etc. and work up a couple of pieces to share at the spring concert with the community choir. This class will very much be shaped by the people attending, as music will be chosen after we know who is coming.
For example if we end up with a violin, flute, piano and dulcimer, we will probably work on a classical piece or even Appalachian tunes. If we have a large number of people, we may be able to split into two different ensembles, such as a brass/woodwind trio and a fiddle/folk group. The possibilities are endless!
